Beekeeping School
The Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture and Melisseus Honeybee Research and Education Initiative will be offering a beekeeping school this summer.
The school consists of a series of 16 classes held over the course of the 2018 growing season. Each class will consist of an hour of classroom lecture, followed by hands-on experience in a honey bee apiary working with live bees. Topics to be covered include safety, hive types and equipment, honey bee life cycle, reproduction, swarming, controlling diseases, parasites, honey harvesting and making preparations for overwintering honey bees.
Class size will be limited and early registration is encouraged. Protective hooded bee jackets, hive tools, and smokers will be provided for each participant to use during the workshops.
If you already have honey bees but aren‛t quite sure what to do, or if you are considering caring for honey bees and want to learn more, these classes will be beneficial for developing beekeeping skills.
