Art on the Farm: Anne Walker & Peter Pennoyer: Grosvenor Atterbury & Stone Barns Architecture
Thursday 07/24/2008 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM FREE
During the final decade of the nineteenth century and first three decades of the twentieth century, Grosvenor Atterbury (1869-1956) was one of the most successful and prolific architects in America. Producing over one hundred major projects, including the celebrated Forest Hills Gardens enclave in Queens, the Beaux Arts-trained designer grasped the stylistic requirements and prevailing architectural tastes of the period leading up to the Great Depression to produce grand mansions, estates and farms groups. Concerned with the social aspects of architecture, he supplemented the residential side of his practice with designs for model tenements, hospitals, workers' housing and town plans. Peter Pennoyer and Anne Walker are currently working on The Architecture of Grosvenor Atterbury, the first book to exclusively examine the scope of the architect's rich and varied body of work. It will be published in 2009 by W. W. Norton & Company. In their slide show/walking tour, they will discuss the architecture of the Stone Barns and set the project in context of Atterbury's body of work. Click here for more information and to register.

Farming in a Changing Climate: Permaculture
Saturday 07/26/2008 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM FREE
Most of our food supply travels thousands of miles to reach our cities and towns, but this situation will change radically in the coming years, as local food and energy production comes to the forefront. Bill Burke and Brendan Baer, of Tristate Food Not Lawns, will outline our current situation, and will present their vision of a local and sustainable food system that combines local sustainable farming with urban and suburban food and energy systems, utilizing the principles of Permaculture to provide greater security in the coming years. Permaculture is a design framework for sustainable human living. The principles of Permaculture have been successfully applied to existing farms and intentional communities around the world, both large and small. However, it is in the urban and suburban setting where Permaculture will be needed most, especially in the current era of rising energy costs and growing transportation problems.
